SOUTH AFRICA
AFRICA
|
Close to Cape Town, and surrounded by the magnificent mountain scenery of the Jonkershoek valley lies the historic town of Stellenbosch. Founded in 1679, by Simon van der Stel, and much taken by its beauty he identified the broad and fertile valley as an ideal location for a settlement. Stellenbosch is the second oldest town in South Africa and the many old buildings and museums are very well preserved. From the start, wine and its production were an integral part of the growing community's life and culture. There are over 30 wine estates around Stellenbosch, which, after Constantia Valley, is the oldest winemaking centre in South Africa.
Stellenbosch University is one of the oldest tertiary education centres in the country. There are a wide variety of cultural activities in which the University's departments of Music, Drama and Fine Arts play an important role.
