GUIDES

The third-oldest landdrost district in South Africa, Swellendam celebrated its 250th anniversary in 1995. This charming town, at the foot of the Langeberg Mountains, is renowned for its many well-preserved Cape Dutch and Georgian buildings, among them the Drostdy (magistrate's court), the only 18th-century drostdy still in existance. It is now a cultural history museum. The museum has been extended into Mayville, another national monument, built in 1853 as a Victorian style residence with a formal garden, complete with gazebo.

The Koomlands River, ancient oak trees and stately, whitewashed homesteads add to its charm. Several oak trees in Swellengrebel Street have been proclaimed national monuments. Swellendam is the centre of the world's largest youngberry-producing area, as well as the surrounding wheat, fruit, sheep and dairy farms.
