![]() Rooi Els is a small, charming, secluded village sandwiched between the sea and the mountains, in the Kogelberg Biosphere Reserve. This was the first Biosphere Reserve to be registered by the United Nations in Southern Africa - an acknowledgement of the remarkable diversity of plant species in the area. Rooiels, with its small sandy beach, takes its name from the farm granted to Abraham Louw in 1839 and the river of that name. It refers to the red alder, a riverine tree occuring in the area.
The area is home to a large troop of shaggy Chacma baboons, a family of Cape Clawless Otters, the Handsome Cape Rockjumper, two pairs of the rare Black Oystercatchers, and a breeding pair of Black Eagles. The beach is spectacular at any time of the day, and as with Pringle Bay, body surfers rate the breakers very highly. Take a stroll around the shores, enjoy a pub lunch and drink in the spectacular sunsets over False Bay.
