![]() Situated in a protected cove on the eastern side of Walker Bay, Gansbaai (goose bay) is a busy fishing village with two harbours, a cannery and a fishmeal factory. The origin of this little village is thought to have been the wreck of the troopship HMS Birkenhead, which came to grief off Danger Point in 1852. A number of survivors settled in the area and scratched a living from the sea and from their gardens.
Boating enthusiasts enjoy this facinating fishing village known for its excellent rock and boat angling, diving, magnificent views across Walker Bay and whale watching. Other favourites are boat based whale watching and for the brave, shark diving tours. The narrow channel between Dyer Island and Geyser Island, 7,5km off the Gansbaai coast, has one of the largest concentrations of great white sharks in the world. Gansbaai is the centre of several shark-viewing and cage-diving operations; the months between April and October are generally the best for shark-viewing.
