![]() Humble thatched cottages dot the shoreline and rare shells lie in the surf. For over 200 years, local fisherman have been setting out to cast their lines at first light. To them, this is Waenhuiskrans, named after the huge seacave capable of housing several ox-wagons. To the many outsiders it is Arniston, named after a British troopship which ran aground in Marcus Bay on 30 May 1815, with the loss of 372 lives. The picturesque village of Kassiesbaai (historically home to Arniston's fishing community) is characterised by its thatched cottages with whitewashed walls and kitchen chimneys, which are typical of the fishing villages built along the Cape coast in the early 19oos. The entire village of 84 cottages has been declared a national monument.
