Established in 1859, Wakkerstroom is the second oldest Boer town in the province. Its name is an Afrikaans translation of the Zulu name for the river flowing near the town, 'uThaka' (Awake). The town suffered an economic downward spiral in the 1880s, when Town Fathers decided that the construction of a railway through Wakkerstroom would cause environmental damage and disturb farming livestock. Volksrust nearby boomed as a result, but the legacy of the Town Fathers is in Wakkerstroom's current status as a superb eco-tourism destination. Sheep and cattle farming are primary industries, and the town is surrounded by wetlands boasting a splendid display of wildflowers and superb birdwatching conditions.
