![]() The industrial town of Witbank is situated along the N4 Highway and is considered to be the Coal Capital of Africa due to the many collieries in the surrounding area. Coal was discovered here in earlier times, but due to the lack of transport, mining only commenced here in 1896. The village of Witbank was established in 1906 on the farm of Witbank. It was named after the large outcrop of white sandstone found here which was frequently used as an outspan area for transport drivers. The settlement was proclaimed a town in 1903.
