![]() This picturesque area around the Elands River Falls was given the names of Waterval Boven & Waterval Onder , meaning 'Above (and below) the Waterfall', by NZASM, the Dutch-South African railway company building a railway line, at the behest of Paul Kruger, from Pretoria to Delgoa Bay. Their legendary exploits in building that line, including severe loss of life, remain part of the spirit of the town. It is at Waterval Boven that the highveld reaches an abrupt end, as the escarpment becomes the lowveld. Cattle and sheep ranching are the principal farming activities in the area, concentrated on the rolling hills and slopes between the ravines of many streams.
