Barberton

SOUTH AFRICA

AFRICA

A quiet town bathed in South African history. Speculators in this valley of beauty and hardship became prospectors as paydirt was struck in 1883 by Frenchman Auguste Robert, heralding a frenzy of incomers, one of whom - Graham Barber - claiming a gold-rich reef. Today, Barberton, still with many of its historic buildings intact, is an attractive, friendly minig town. This mining settlement is located within the mineral-rich Barberton Greenstone Belt, an area of great geological significance. Barberton is home to an array of wild and rare flora and is renowned for its unique Barberton Daisy. The Barberton Daisy originated from here and was discovered in 1884. Barberton was home to many interesting characters including the well-known author Percy Fitzpatrick (Jock of the Bushveld).
