![]() The broad river which passes through the district - before rising to a succession of streams on the eastern slopes of the Mauchsberg - was once alive with crocodiles. This led local Shangaan to call it uluSaba, or 'the fearful river'. A town grew here after well-known hunter HT Glynn came across what he deemed to be gold-bearing rock. Friend and mining expert JC Ingle confirmed Glynn's suspicions, and it was not long before the Glynns-Lydenburg Gold Mining Company was formed. Today's town of Sabie on the banks of the Sabie River is set among an enviable array of natural beauty. Its entrance is lined with towering bluegums, and the noise of thundering water sweeping across the town like an invisible mist makes Sabie an enchanting, enlivening experience.
