AFRICA

Nelspruit (Nels stream) is the capital, and economically the province's principal city. The brothers Gert, Andre and Louis Nel, engineers of the Eastern Line from Pretoria to Delgoa Bay, used the land for winter grazing. This area was later used as a forward depot for construction crews requiring a lowveld base for construction of the westward line. A town developed around this railhead, and flourished as wagon routes became less travelled and a stopover between the gold rush towns of Barberton and Pilgrim's Rest was required. While the frenzy of those towns soon died down, the infrastructure of Nelspruit became more stable, and it was declared a town in 1905.

Today Nelspruit is a substantial town situated amid the orange groves. The enormous growth potential of a prosperous agricultural community and forestry industry provides a stable base for the Nelspruit economy. The town is surrounded by land with some of the highest agricultural potential in the country, while a stable water supply will ensure continued production. Products such as citrus, subtropical fruit, tobacco, nuts, vegetables, meat and sugar cane are produced.
