![]() The 78 000 square kilometre province, named Mpumalanga after the cosmic phenomenon of satellite spinning we call 'sunrise', encompasses markedly different landforms, climates and peoples. Early inhabitants were the mysterious San, who adapted a nomadic lifestyle to the temperate conditions of the west and tropical ones of the east. Later, immigrants from central Africa introduced the Iron Age, permanent settlements and walled villages to protect themselves from predators. The next visitors were, inevitably, the explorers and missionaries from Europe, who found the terrain and meteorology of this area full of wealth and adventure in equal measure. The legacy of the above is, respectively, in rock artwork, cultural villages, churches and gold mines. These can all be seen by today's visitor to Mpumalanga, and will in so doing be a facinating insight into an African mélange of culture and history.
The topography of Mpumalanga matches its diverse cultures in its celebration of nature's unpredictability. The high-lying west, an area of thornbush and antelope, falls uncontrollably over the escarpment, the long ridge of cascading mountains pouring down toward the Indian Ocean in a series of forests and falls and fractured rock, then to the Lowveld, where bananas and other tropical fruits thrive in the balmy conditions of sultry summer days, and further south to the Grass and Wetlands, where abundant birdlife twitters in the whispering reeds, where to describe the groundcover as grass-green becomes an understatement. The Kruger National Park, shared with the Limpopo Province, lies to the east, one of the world's most famous and important parks.
Mpumalanga is not just about the great, green outdoors; its infrastructure is well developed, with essential services readily available, adventure tourism (including hiking, mountain biking, white water rafting, etc) fully established and full recreational and accommodation facilities.
No matter which season you are in, the moment the sun rises above any horizon you may be looking at, there is a warmth you will feel as you encounter the land and the people of Mpumalanga, who feel this warmth first and name their province after it.
