However, a look beyond its obvious beauty brings interest and entertainment in generous amounts. These are ancient lands, attested by the Makapansgat Caves near Mokopane (Potgitersrus). Here can be found some of the oldest and most comprehensive evidence of prehistoric human habitation. Further along the time scale is found unique history of the Stone Age San, their culture largely existing today in rock artwork and archeological relics. And the past lives on today in the baobab, considered the 'upside-down tree' uprooted and cast back to the earth by angry gods. The east takes the visitor to the awe-inspiring wildlife heritage of the Olifants River Valley and the Lowveld. The Kruger National Park shoulders the province and houses a multitude of fauna and flora. A crisp, camp coffee morning and cicada afternoon are an indispensable part of the Limpopo Province experience. Here are also the mountains, rivers and forests of the Letaba district, an unhurried, fertile area of exquisite beauty. Southwest takes you to the Nylsvlei wetland and unspoilt mountains of the Warterberg. Here, the heat is quenched and the muscles soothed by the mineral baths of the area's hot spring resorts. Centrally situated, Polokwane (Pietersburg) is the geographic and economic centre of the province, and provides the administrative workforce for a province of industry and determination. Heading northwards, you travel through picturesque Makhado (Louis Trichardt) at the foot of the Soutpansberg. Following the mountain range are a wealth of bush camps, conservancies, game, unexpected fruit, rock paintings and exquisite beauty. At the furthest point north, the N1 motorway crosses the gargling expanse of the tireless Limpopo and into the Southern African countries.
