![]() The resort town of Margate acts as the economic centre for a strip of coastline almost completely made up of accommodations, holiday homes and tourist-related establishments. Margate is a mid-winter magnet for up-country South Africans, as they escape the sub-zero temperatures of the Free State and Gauteng for the mild climate of the South Coast. An added bonus of visiting Margate in June and July is the annual Sardine Run, with seemingly endless shoals of these silvery little fish attracting dolphins, sharks and even whales - generating much excitement among residents and visitors alike.
