Maputaland

SOUTH AFRICA

AFRICA

Bounded by the Ubombo and Lebombo mountains in the west, Maputaland covers the vast coastal plain extending eastwards to the shores of the Indian Ocean and from just south of the Mfolozi River northwards to Mozambique. The coastline is the main southern Indian Ocean breeding ground of the leatherback turtle, while the Kosi palms fringing Lake Amanzimyama are home to one of South Africa's rarest breeding birds, the palmnut vulture. Situated at the southern distribution of several bird species and with a rich diversity of ecosystems, Maputaland is a popular destination with birders.

The Sodwana Bay National Park lies 15km south of Lake Sibaya and consists of a narrow coastal strip of lush forest-covered sand dunes. The park proclaimed in 1950, is best known for its fishing and rich birdlife. The major activity of Sodwana Bay is scuba-diving and snorkelling. It is the only tropical diving region in South Africa and there are many popular dive sites here that offer divers the chance to experience some amazing underwater seascapes including overhangs, mushroom rocks and incredible marine fauna and flora.
