![]() Pietermaritzburg, or 'Maritzburg', with it's many Victorian buildings and national monuments has many historical attractions. The Church of the Vow, now the Voortrekker Museum, was built in 1841 and is now part of the Msunduzi Museum Complex located at 333 Boom Street. The Natal Museum in Pietermaritizburg is dedicated to the collecting, preserving, studying and exhibiting of items of cultural and scientific value, focusing on both the Natural and Human.
The Golden Horse Casino with it's magnificient 14m statue Pegasus adorning its entrance, is a major tourist attraction in Pietermaritzburg. The Scottsville Race Course in the city provides weekly entertainment to avid race goers. And a visit to the 46 hectare National Botanic Gardens in Pietermaritzburg is a wonderful way to spend a Sunday afternoon any time of the year.
The Comrades Marathon which begins (or ends) in Pietermaritzburg, attracts runners from around the world to participate in this grueling 90 km ultramarathon.
