GUIDES

AFRICA

St Lucia acts as a base to explore a surrounding countryside like no other in the country. The wetlands, swamps, mangroves and lagoons making up the town's environment attract many eco-tourists and nature lovers. Extensive conservation programmes have been undertaken since a game reserve was established on the estuarine system fed by the Mkuze, Nyalazi and Hluhluwe Rivers.

This enclave within the World Heritage Site presents the entire range of accommodation options, from back-packer to ultra-luxury, and while the approach from Mtubatuba is breathtaking, nothing compares to views of the surrounding magic from the village itself. A particular nearby attraction is the Crocodile Centre that features a breeding programme for two endangered African species, the dwarf and long-snout crocodile. Mission Rock is a popular outdoor barbeque spot some 15 kms north of St Lucia village.
