GUIDES

AFRICA

The bustling town of Richards bay began as a makeshift harbour set up by Commodore of the Cape, Sir Frederick Richards during the Anglo-Zulu War of 1879, and a settlement sprang up around a port now named after Richards. The town boasts the country's largest harbour and some of its most magnificent wetland scenery.

Richards Bay now boasts the largest export coal terminal in the world, loading 65 million tons every year, and the specialised ships that call are a must-see for maritime buffs. The enormous operations of Richards Bay Minerals top the list of Industrial Tourism opportunities for the curious-minded.

Richards Bay is one of the few cities in the country to promote Industrial Tourism. Industries such as Richards Bay Minerals offer tours of their plants and operations, which visitors always find fascinating.
