A tranquil little village on the banks of the Duivenhoks River, Heidelberg is named after its more famous sister city, Heidelberg, Germany. The town developed around a church established in 1855 to serve the farming community living in the area between Swellendam and Riversdale. It offers the visitor great natural beauty and real country hospitality. It has an interesting history with many tales of the Anglo-Boer War.  The total population of Heidelberg consists of 5320 people. The original community consisted of the Khoi-San people.
