Meaning ‘place of rivers,’ the name Dinokeng is derived from the languages of the baTswana and baPedi people who were the original inhabitants of the area. The Dinokeng region covers 281 000ha, hugging the north-east quadrant of Gauteng stretching from the mining village of Cullinan in the south to the Rust de Winter dam in the north. It lies in the catchment area of two rivers that flow into the Olifants and Limpopo Rivers before they move on to the Indian Ocean. Conservation is a big part of the Dinokeng project and the area has many game reserves and conservancies which in the future will stock all of the Big Five. The grassland bushveld is home to a variety of game including zebra, hyena, giraffe, buffalo and eland. Bird-watchers will be enthralled by Dinokeng, as it is one of the country's best bird-watching spots.
