AFRICA

Cornish miners, known as 'Cousin Jacks', settled around the old Rietfontein Gold Mine in 1903  finding the cheap, tax-free land very much to their liking. The settlement grew to present-day Edenvale, a large suburban zone of homes and parks. Edenvale is located halfway between the airport and city, and provides a convenient base for the business traveler. The Modderfontein dynamite factory was established in 1896 for the manufacture of explosives and has become one of the largest explosives and chemical factories in the world. The factory is now surrounded by a conservation park of 8000 ha, and is home to several species of buck and antelope and over 200 bird species.
