 Brakpan was founded in 1886 on the farm Weltevreden (well satisfied) and named for a pan of brackish water that is still there on the town's outskirts. Brakpan flourished in the first half of the 20th Century as a gold and coal centre. Coal and gold are still mined here, but Brakpan's economy, like that of Boksburg and Benoni, is based on manufacturing and heavy engineering industries. Carnival City Casino is its main attraction.
