![]() A charming village with terraced Victorian cottages, developed around the Premier Diamond Mine. The mine was opened following the discovery in 1902 of a rich kimberlite pipe by Sir Thomas Cullinan, in whose honour the village was named. Among the many large diamonds recovered from the mine, the most famous is the Cullinan Diamond, the largest gem diamond ever found. Bought by the Transvaal Government, it was presented to King Edward VII and forms part of the British Crown Jewels. The sceptre includes the 530 carat Cullinan I diamond while the Imperial State Crown includes the 317 carat Cullinan II diamond. The giant open pit mine at Cullinan is four times larger than the famous Big Hole of Kimberley! The Cullinan Mine is still fully operational, and in fact still produces 25% of the world's gem-quality diamonds.
