![]() The town traces its origins to 1894 when the railway line from Pretoria to Lourenco Marques (now Maputo) reached this area, and a station was built. In 1904, CJG Erasmus laid out a village on his farm Hondsrivier ('dog's river') nearby and, predictably, called it Erasmus. In 1935 the village council was given permission to revert to the original name Bronkhorstspruit. Bronkhorstspruit is the commercial and industrial centre for an area of mixed farming. Large deposits of fire-clay are mined in the district. Bronkhorstspruit Dam - also known as Bronkhorst Bay, is 10km south of the town on the river of the same name. It has been developed into a reserve and holiday resort. Nan Hua Temple - a Buddhist Temple reputed to be the largest in the southern hemisphere was built here in the late 1990s. The study of Buddhism and the Chinese language are available to the interested visitor.
