This newish, generally affluent residential town on Johannesburg's northern fringe became a municipality on 1 July 1969 when Bryanston, Sandown, Sandhurst and parts of northeastern Johannesburg were amalgamated. The name is a composite of the names of Sandown and Bryanston. A commercial and civic hub was developed but the park-like setting of the constituent suburbs, with their large residential properties, has been maintained. Sandton City is among the largest suburban shopping malls in the southern hemisphere with over 450 shops. The nearby Nelson Mandela Square, a business, shopping and arts centre takes its architectural inspiration from Venice's St Mark's and other great European piazzas.
