The town of Randburg, to the northwest of central Johannesburg, became a municipality on 1 July 1959 when 26 'rural' townships were amalgamated. The name is derived from the South African monetry unit, the rand, which replaced pound sterling in 1959 when a decimal coinage system was introduced. Now part of the Greater Johannesburg Municipality, Randburg is largely a residential town and industrialisation is limited. The Brightwater Commons - formerly Randburg Waterfront, is an extensive redevelopment, comprising of shops, restaurants and public parkland. The lake has been filled in to accommodate the complex, although the musical fountain have been retained.
